How it works

You may like to download the sample exercises to get an idea of what’s involved and how simple and fun Help Them Read is to use.

If you have registered, you will have been offered the free Foundation exercises. If you haven’t already downloaded these, you can do this here once you have logged in. (To log in, you must have first registered).

Once downloaded, print out the exercise. We don’t recommend attempting to teach, or assess the learner from a computer screen.

Ready to go?

When you are ready to proceed with Help Them Read, the first thing you will need to do is to assess your learner’s reading ability.

There are 80 groups of exercises (called Sets) within Help Them Read. The assessment will give you the recommended point at which to start with your learner.

Don’t worry! You can work through the exercises at the learner’s pace and download further Sets as you need them. You can stop whenever you wish. There is no commitment for you to subscribe to any number of Sets.

The only equipment you will require is a black pen, a red pen, index cards and sheets of A4 paper. Then, all that is required is enthusiasm and commitment to spend 20 or so minutes a day, on a regular basis, to help your learner learn to read. Our experience suggests that the quickest progress will be made if the exercises are done daily for 5-6 days a week.

Step by step

Step 1. The Assessment

Download the free Assessment here. (Adobe Acrobat Reader required. If needed, you can download it here.)

Please note that the Assessment file may take a while to download, depending upon your internet connection.

Start at Test 1 and work your way through the tests until your learner starts to have difficulty. Note the number of the test at which your learner had difficulty. This will be your starting point. If your learner had difficulty with “Test 10” then you need to start your teaching at “Set 10”.

Step 2. Register

If you haven’t already registered, we recommend that you register before making your first purchase. You don’t have to register to purchase any Sets, but if you do it enables us to keep track of your purchase history and offer you every tenth lesson free as well as other offers we may make, from time to time.

Step 3. Purchase the Set you need

Go to the Buy Sets page purchase the Set you need. You can return to this page to purchase further Sets as you need them. Each Set is self explanatory and contains full instructions on what you and your learner should do. Have fun and feel free to let us know how you get on!
