Some reasons for recognising where help may be required
Children
and adults who have reading difficulties may have, or have had, some of the following
problems.

Delay in speaking, creating sentences and/or pronouncing words
- Poor eyesight and hearing
- Difficulty with spelling
- Difficulty in kicking and/or catching a ball
- Difficulty in tying shoe laces or getting dressed
- Writing figures and/or letters the wrong way round (e.g. 15 instead of 51) and/or confusing “b’s” and “d’s”
- Reversing words when writing and reading (e.g. “was” for “saw”)
- Confusing left from right
- Difficulty in remembering the order of days, months, telephone numbers and simple instructions
- Consistently making simple spelling mistakes (e.g. “wos” instead of “was”)
- Problems understanding what they read or is read to them
- Taking longer than average to perform written work
- Lack of self confidence and low self esteem
